The Assistant Golf Course Superintendent reports directly to the Golf Course Superintendent, under his direction the 2nd assistant superintendent directs and participates in the maintenance of golf course areas, including but not limited to greens, tees & fairways. Functions:

The Peninsula Club is offering a unique opportunity for a candidate who desires renovation experience as an Assistant Superintendent. The Peninsula Club is a private, member-owned, 18-hole golfing community located on Lake Norman, 20 miles north of Charlotte, NC, and is undergoing a full course renovation. The golf course has been closed since October of 2023 and will reopen in October of 2024. The highlights of the renovation include: wall-to-wall redesign by Beau Welling Design, installation of new irrigation system with Rain Bird’s IC system, new drainage system, and installation of Capillary Flow bunker liner system. The hired Assistant Superintendent will be immersed in all aspects of golf course construction, assist in the grow-in program for all turfgrass areas, and reestablish maintenance procedures for the entire property. The new course will feature Tahoma 31 on tees, fairways, and primary rough; Tif Eagle Ultradwarf Bermudagrass on putting greens; and fine fescue in “native areas”.

Job Description:
The Assistant Golf Course Superintendent will work directly under the Golf Course Superintendent and eager to learn all aspects of the golf course maintenance operation. Having the ability and skill set to communicate to team members and Golf Course Superintendent is very important. The candidate will rotate every third weekend except for tournaments and other big events. In the last six months the club has committed to multiple course improvement projects. Capillary Concrete bunkers have been installed on all bunkers, extensive drainage work done by XGD throughout all holes, and we are in the process of laser leveling and sodding all tees with Tahoma 31. All projects will be completed by May 1. The club is also in the process of planning a $3.2+ million dollar reconstruction project to the driving range and adding a new short game area. River Landing is one of the top golfing destinations with tournaments hosted here from all types of organizations and golfing competitions.With two Top 40 courses in the state and the two top courses in our region. We have two 18-hole golf courses that were designed by nationally acclaimed architect Clyde Johnston of Hilton Head, South Carolina. Through Johnston’s incredible vision of the remarkable land entrusted to him at River Landing, he carved out a masterpiece in the two 18-hole golf courses. His designs take full advantage of the unique natural beauty of our eastern coastal plain region, including scenic lakes, lush woodlands, and the peaceful Northeast Cape Fear River.

Job Duties:

  • Assists in planning and supervising the maintenance of greens, tees and fairways
  • Schedules work and supervises the employees and the use of the equipment
  • Instructs equipment operators on the operation
  • Take care of mowing and other equipment
  • Supervises pesticide applications and/or operates and calibrates pesticide application equipment
  • Supervises and participates in the operation and maintenance of pumps
  • Maintenance of irrigation and drainage systems
  • Assists in personnel management and evaluation, employee safety, personnel discipline
  • May also modify the daily work schedule based on professional interpretation

Working Knowledge of the Maintenance of:

  • Golf course tees, fairways, and greens
  • The seeding and maintenance practices for golf course turf
  • The planting, cultivating, pruning, and caring for plants, shrubs and trees
  • The characteristics and proper use of various fertilizers and soil conditioners
  • Herbicides and pest control methods and materials
  • Drainage control methods
  • Irrigation system, including wells, pumps and automatic controls

Ability To:

  • Schedule and supervise maintenance work to achieve the most efficient utilization of workers and equipment
  • To prepare clear and concise reports
  • To maintain effective employee and public relations
  • Represents organization on committees as assigned
  • Reports significant information to management team
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Background/Experience:

  • 2 or 4 year degree in Turf Management or Agronomy
  • 1-2 years Experience working on golf course
  • Pesticide License preferred
  • Valid Drivers License
