Job Description:
Qualified candidates will work closely, in a team atmosphere, with the Golf Course Superintendent and Senior Assistant to manage the staff of 30 employees. Senior Assistant Superintendent

The Country Club of Spartanburg is a private country club that opened in 1908. It consists of an 18 hole golf course with three separate practice facilities (short-game facility, two driving ranges). In 2008 the golf course was completely renovated by architect Kris Spence and consists mostly of Tifway 419 Bermudagrass as the primary grass but collars and some tees have been re-sodded with Tahoma 31 Bermudagrass with more planned for this summer. Greens are A1/A4 Bentgrass with practice greens consisting of Tifeagle Bermuda, MiniVerde Bermuda, and Diamond Zoysiagrass. Total maintained acreage on the golf course is 80 acres with the three practice facilities comprising an additional 22 acres. Planning is also taking place for next year 2023 with three holes (14-16) being completely redesigned and renovated with a possible greens conversion and complete bunker renovation with Kris Spence performing this work as well.

The senior assistant golf course superintendent reports directly to the golf course superintendent. Under the superintendent's supervision, this position directs and participates in the day-to-day maintenance of the golf course areas, including but not limited to, tees, greens, fairways, native areas, and practice facilities. The ideal candidate for this position will be a professional and energetic self-starter with the desire to lead and learn while working toward becoming a golf course superintendent. The senior assistant superintendent may serve in the superintendent's capacity during his/her absence.

Essential Duties and Tasks:
•Assists in planning and supervising the maintenance of greens, tees and fairways; schedules work; and supervises and trains the employees and the use of the equipment.
•Instructs equipment operators on the operation and care of mowing and other equipment; supervises pesticide applications and/or operates and calibrates pesticide application equipment; and supervises and participates in the operation and maintenance of pumps, and in the maintenance of irrigation and drainage systems.
•Highly motivated and detail oriented and aligns with superintendent to complete all tasks to the highest standards and achieve team goals.
•Assists in personnel management and evaluation, employee safety and personnel discipline.
•Flexibility to modify the daily work schedule based on professional interpretation.
•Engage in a professional manner in the presence of members and their guests.

Employment standards and Educational requirements:
•Working knowledge of the maintenance of golf course tees, fairways and greens; seeding and maintenance practices for golf course turf; planting, cultivating, pruning, and caring for plants, shrubs and trees; characteristics and proper use of various fertilizers and soil conditioners/amendments; herbicides, fungicides, and other pest control methods and materials; drainage control methods; and Toro Lynx irrigation
•Proficiency in computer use, knowledge of Microsoft Office and other applications as specified by supervisor.

Assistant Superintendent
Jefferson Landing, Jefferson, NC
Salary: $38,000 - $55,000

Nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains on the Historic New River. Jefferson Landing has an 18-hole golf course and a 4-hole short course. Bunkers and tees have been completely renovated. We have added a four-hole short course with 5 more to be added in the future. The Assistant will need to be detail oriented and self-motivated and will be involved in a variety of tasks including course setup, chemical and fertilizer applications, calibration, irrigation repairs, deep watering turf and wilt watching. He or she will be involved in training employees to work efficient and safe. The Assistant will be involved in special projects and will need to be able to lead, multitask, supervise, and delegate job responsibilities.

Educational Requirements:
Applicants should have some educational training in Turf Management or several years' experience.

Experience Requirements:
Two years on the job training preferred.

Special Requirements:
Ability to obtain North Carolina pesticide license within 90 days.
