Turf Grass Worker

The purpose of this position is to work to present and maintain the golf course in the best condition. This is accomplished by mowing turf, raking bunkers, changing holes, moving tee markers, and replacing water coolers. Other duties include spraying pesticides, assisting in maintaining buildings and equipment. Typical tasks maintains course by mowing turf, seeding greens and tees, aerating greens and tees, topdressing greens and tees, verti-cutting greens, applying fertilizers and pesticides, and inspecting the needs of the turf. Maintains and builds bunkers by refurbishing bunkers, building bunkers, edging and reshaping bunkers, raking, and maintaining surrounding areas. Maintains course landscape by inspecting and assessing needs, planting and removing trees, trimming trees and shrubbery, collecting limbs and leaves, and removing litter and debris.

Qualifications Education: Ability to read and understand written instruction.

Experience: Minimum one year of related experience in grounds landscaping or golf course maintenance.

Other Requirements:
• Class C Driver’s License
• Comprehensive knowledge of the methods, tools and equipment required to maintain golf course greens, fairways, roughs, and cart paths.
• Thorough knowledge of the operating and maintenance requirements of power mowers and related equipment.
• General knowledge of and skill in the proper methods of planting, cultivating, watering and trimming greens, tees and fairways.
• Some knowledge of the characteristics of the various kinds of grasses used in golf courses and of the means of controlling grass diseases and pests.
• Ability to work outdoors year-round.
• Ability to develop and maintain an effective working relationship with associates, supervisors, and the general public.
• Ability to work nights and weekends.

Physical Demands:  Exerting 10-50 lbs. frequently, and up to 10 lbs. occasionally.

Working Conditions: This position generally works outdoors year-round in all types of weather conditions.

Turfgrass Internship

The Tree Farm is a new private golf club in Batesburg, South Carolina. It is the vision of PGA Tour player and golf architecture enthusiast Zac Blair. The routing of the golf course was completed by world renowned golf course architect Tom Doak and the design of the course and all its features was completed by Kye Goalby and his team of shapers. The Tree Farm is a private boutique golf club with a national membership that puts a premium on impeccable daily conditioning throughout the golfing season. The club will be closed from June 1 till Sept 1 on a yearly basis to complete cultural practices and miscellaneous course improvement projects.

Modern Turf, Inc. in Rembert, SC seeks a Sod Farm Operations Manager. We need a dynamic individual who is a top-notch grass grower and great personnel manager! The farms are located in Sumter County, SC and many of the staff live in the city of Camden which is like living in a Norman Rockwell painting in the South! Successful applicant will be responsible for growing, renovating and maintaining 10 +/- varieties of high-end warm season turf for sod and sprig harvesting on two farms totaling 1400 acres that are 10 miles apart.

Responsibilities will include, but not be limited to: renovating fields and planting grass, ordering and applying all necessary fertilizers,chemicals and other turf products as required and calibrating sprayers and spreaders. Operations manager will oversee the harvesting manager and equipment manager and work with various pumps and irrigation systems and sharing responsibility for them with the harvesting manager; hiring, managing, training and supervising farm staff; and working some weekends. The primary responsibility of the Production Manager is to maximize the production of all grasses and ensure nothing but the highest quality product is making it to market. Successful applicant will have a minimum of an associate of science degree, a commanding knowledge of growing warm season grasses and must be able to obtain a South Carolina pesticide applicators license within 3 months of hire date.

Job Summary:
After 20 Years of service with Oakland Plantation Turf Farm, our current Farm Manager, John Williams will be retiring this summer. We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Agronomist and Farm Manager to join our team. The ideal candidate will have extensive knowledge and expertise in agronomy and team management, with a strong focus on growing and managing a high-quality sod farm. As the Farm Manager, you will be responsible for managing all aspects of the farm's operations, including crop planning, irrigation, pest management, and equipment maintenance, while ensuring the farm's production meets or exceeds quality and quantity targets.  The Sod Farm Operations Manager is a salary-exempt position and compensation will be commensurate with experience.

Key Responsibilities:
• Develop and implement crop plans and growing schedules to ensure the farm meets production targets.
• Oversee the farm's day-to-day operations, including irrigation, pest management, fertilization, and communication with the Production Manager and harvesting teams .
• Manage and maintain farm equipment and infrastructure, ensuring all equipment is properly maintained and functioning correctly.
• Work closely with the office to ensure that the farm's sod is of the highest quality and meets customer demands.
• Monitor and analyze soil conditions, water usage, and crop yields to make informed decisions and adjustments to the farm's operations.
• Manage and train farm staff, ensuring all employees are trained on safety procedures, farm protocols, and equipment operation.
• Develop and manage budgets and production targets to ensure the farm operates efficiently and profitably.
• Stay up-to-date on industry trends and developments to continuously improve the farm's operations and productivity.

Qualifications:
• Associates degree in Agronomy, Horticulture, or a related field. (Or considerable experience and expertise)
• 5+ years of experience in an industry related to agriculture or warm season sod maintenance.
• Strong understanding of crop production, irrigation, fertilization, pest management, and equipment maintenance.
• Excellent communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
• Strong organizational and time-management skills.
• Ability to operate farm equipment and machinery.
• Knowledge of environmental regulations and laws related to farming.
