The Seabrook Island Club is a thirty-six hole private club open year round located on Seabrook Island near historic Charleston, SC. The Ocean Winds course was designed by Willard Byrd and constructed in 1972. The Crooked Oaks course is a Robert Trent Jones, Sr. design that was constructed in 1979. Crooked Oaks was redesigned and renovated by John B. Lafoy in 1999. The $2.3 million dollar project included the complete renovation of all tee and green complexes, installation of a new irrigation system, new drainage and a complete bunker renovation. The summer of 2003 Ocean Winds was converted to Champion Bermuda and the following summer Crooked Oaks was converted. Both the Ocean Winds and Crooked Oaks courses are certified members of the Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Program.

Greens  are Champion, Tees are Seashore Paspalum/419 Bermuda, and Fairways are 419 Bermuda. 

Experience: The Seabrook Island Club offers interns a unique opportunity to learn how to manage Ultra dwarf Bermuda along the South Carolina coast. An attempt will be made to involve interns into as many aspects of golf course maintenance as possible. These duties will include, but are not limited to:

• The daily operation of both courses (Set Up, Mow greens, rake bunkers, etc)
• Irrigation repair and maintenance (Handwatering, troubleshooting,etc)
• Calibration, Fertilization and chemical spray applications
• UltraDwarf bermudagrass greens management
• Special project work
• Strategies associated with managing turfgrass with poor water quality
• Continue conversion of Tees to Seashore Paspalum
• Master Plan Renovations Scheduled

Three Summer Internships, The Cliffs at Glassy, Travelers Rest, SC

Salary:  $11 - $12/hr. (DOE)

The Cliffs at Glassy is a premier private club that was built in 1991 by designer Tom Jackson and lays beautifully on top of a 3000 ft. mountain with breath taking views on 15 of 18 holes. Golf Digest ranked it the 3rd most scenic course in the country. The course consist of bentgrass greens, tees and fairways with a blend of Kentucky blue grass/turf type tall fescue rough. Should a candidate desire cool season experience in the transition zone this would be an idea course selection. The crew consist of 25-30 members annually. The Cliffs at Glassy will make a great learning experience for an intern to achieve new skills and prepare them for entering the golf course management industry. Upon consideration please know, The Cliffs at Glassy is one of seven Cliffs Clubs located throughout the mountain and lake regions of upstate South Carolina and western North Carolina and often promotes interns and other positions within these clubs.

The intern’s responsibility will include all facets of golf course management including but not limited to fertilizer and pesticide applications as well as calibrations, extensive hand watering w/ extensive water management skills, irrigation system management and repair, management of crew members, assistance in finical budgeting and all other daily practices not mentioned. A candidate must have a good attitude, strong work ethic, be attentive to detail, eager to learn, organizational skills, etc. Perspective intern should have the ultimate goal of becoming a golf course superintendent and must keep in mind that this is a learning experience to grow closer in achieving that goal. Any intern graduating from school soon after internship completion will have an immediate opportunity for a fulltime managerial position (AIT or Assistant). Educational Requirements

Currently enrolled in or recent graduate of a 2 or 4 year turfgrass university.

Two Summer Interns,  Lake Toxaway Country Club, Lake Toxaway, NC

Lake Toxaway Country Club is an 18 hole course, open year round with 8,500 annual rounds.  The course has A1 / A4 greens and L93 Bent tees and fairways.  

Housing provided on site near the course, meals provided, Uniforms and Golfing Privileges. 

Interns will be involved in all aspects of golf course maintenance including but not limited to fertilizer & chemical application and equipment calibration, moisture management, hand watering, course set-up, equipment operation & maintenance, tournament setup, and course project supervision. Interns will also get extensive time learning and running a small crew both at the golf course and independently at the Learning Center. 

The Club also features Championship level croquet courts that are used regularly for large local and national tournaments. Interns will learn the importance of managing and providing an excellent playing surface adjacent to the primary golf course.

Wexford Plantation, located in Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, is an extraordinary 33-year-old, member-owned private community, open year round with 17,000 annual rounds. The club consists of a recently renovated Clubhouse, an Arnold Palmer designed 18-hole golf course, 6 tennis courts and a Harbour with a lock system.
